Sports Massage
Sports massage is a specialised treatment designed to
enhance sporting performance, help minimise injury by
maintaining flexibility, reduce scar tissue and aid the
healing process. It is useful before, during or after
sporting activity.
During exercise muscles use oxygen and nutrient supplied
by the blood to contract repeatedly as required by the
activity. If the activity is more vigorous then more oxygen
and nutrients are required. Muscle activity also produces
waste products, while any injuries produce inflammation
and bleeding.
Massage helps recovery by flushing out and removing the
by products of muscle activity and enriching the muscles
at a cellular level , dramatically reduces the recovery
time after exercise and injury and reduces the formation
of scar tissue.
Sports massage is best complemented by using various
resistive and strengthening techniques prior to and at
full range of movement to enhance flexibility thereby
reducing the potential for future injury.
When not to have a massage
It is important to seek advice from your GP if you have
a medical condition prior to seeing a massage therapist.
There are a number of conditions where massage is not
recommended or requires medical clearance, such as:
- After trauma when the body’s initial response
to injury is bleeding and inflammation. If the trauma
is localised then massage of surrounding tissue may
be beneficial but massage of trauma site will only aggravate
the injury. Massage after swelling has subsided is usually
very helpful and aids in the healing process.
- After major surgery you should seek your doctors
approval prior to having massage.
- It is advisable to tell the therapist about an injury
or recent surgery prior to booking an appointment. At
Double Bay Massage, we happy to discuss any medical
concerns or queries ahead of your booking.
